7/26/2010 Garden Update

Our tomatoes are slowly starting to go crazy again! WAHOOOO!!! We also picked a cucumber today. =) Unfortunately, the beefsteak tomato plant is NOT a beefsteak....the tomatoes are only about 2-3 inches in diameter.
As you can see, the plants are getting a tad tall again. Adam has to pick the ones at the top because I'm way too short.

Here is one of the Crimson Sweets. It's one of the medium sized ones. I think they will be ready in a few more weeks. I can't wait! MMMMMMM
My feet are only a size 6 but you can see how big this melon is compared to my foot.

7/19/2010 Garden Update

I decided to take a picture of our carrots this time. Honestly, I have no idea if they are all ready or not. I know nothing about planting carrots. LOL
I picked 4 carrots so far. Two of them were yellow, one white and one purple. The purple one looks really cool when you slice it. There are rings of yellow and purple. Unfortunately.....they were all really bitter. BLECH. I will try cooking them next time to see if they will sweeten up a little bit. I was hoping the carrots would be a little bigger since the stalks were so HUGE!

Birthday Goodies

Here are the belated pictures from my belated birthday. This year I was sick and couldn't really celebrate my birthday until the following weekend. The cake was YUMMY and Vegan. Gotta love Whole Foods. Hopefully there will be one near Branson someday. Adam picked this one up when he was in Tulsa.
My brother already got me the awesome jersey for my birthday that I blogged about earlier. He surprised me with yet another gift....a Tour de France Jersey and keychain. WAHOOO. I have the best big bro!

I finally decided on a Nook as my eReader. It has taken me quite a while to come to this conclusion and so far I am happy with my decision. Even better....my parents got it for me as a gift. =) The one that was initially sent was defective and we had to exchange it. So far this one seems to be working fine. At the moment I am just trying to figure out which of my previously purchased books will work on it. I'll post more about the Nook after I have had a chance to play around on it more.

7/9/2010 Garden Update

The dates will be a little off for the next few blog posts because I have been sick this past week. It's been loads of fun coughing and gagging. I've been battling a chest cold for the entirety and a couple of days ago I decided to add an anaphylactic reaction to the mix. I was sucking on some honey lozenges and found out that I am allergic to bee pollen. DOH! My throat keeps twitching and muscle spasm-ing. Not fun. Everything seems to being almost gone (knock on wood) so....yay!

This top picture is right below the melons. Every year they tend to go over the wall and I a need to put them on the ledge. You can see a few up there.
This cool melon is an Orangelo Watermelon. It's much bigger now. I'll try to post those pics soon. The inside flesh is bright orange. I can't wait to cut this baby open!

Our harvest that day. Chinese Red Noodle Beans and cherry tomatoes. The tomatoes are starting to grow like crazy now. They plants are around 7 feet at the moment. =)

7/4/2010 Garden Update

Here is "Melon Row" so far. The watermelons are now taking over, as you can see. If you look closely at the far end of the picture, you can see where the groundhog did his damage.

This is one of the green melons. Not sure what a "green melon" is but....that's what the heirloom seed packet said. The cantaloupes and cucumbers don't have any fruit yet. Thanks Groundhog. Grrrrr

7/3/2010 Garden Update

Our garden is definitely coming along. I just picked the beets and they are HUGE! I forgot to harvest them so they are a tad larger than normal. I've never tried beets before but decided to plant these ones because of how cool they look. The rings are pretty nifty looking!


Here are some of our Chinese Long Beans.
The tomatoes are taking over! I think we'll have plenty of cherry tomatoes! Next year we are going to pull out more of the plants. We may still need to pull some out so that they don't choke out the 3 regular sized tomatoes. I forgot to take a picture of the melons but will post them in a little bit.

First Groundhog of the Year

It's that time of year again. Groundhogs living in our wall next to our watermelon plants. Arggggg! Here is the culprit. Within 2 days he managed to eat the leaves off of 2 cantaloupe plants, 1 cucumber plant, 1 green melon plant and 1 watermelon plant.

I was out at the wall and saw him trapped in a hole, similar to what happened to Kahlan. Honestly, I was all about killing the guy. Now, for those that know me, you know I'm all about loving animals and saving them. Heck, I cut out all meat in my diet except for fish. However, groundhogs are an entirely different story. Between the groundhogs and crows....our melons are constantly under attack. After watching so many episodes of Legend of the Seeker lately, posting the head on a stick to warn all other groundhogs......not completely against it. Yeah Yeah Yeah, call PETA.

We didn't end up doing that. We wound up buying a trap and trapping the guy, as you can see in the picture. *sigh. If we get another one though......
